The word cognitive comes from the word cognition. Cognition means “the act or process of knowing–perception; the product of such a process (something thus known, perceived).
The word dissonance means disagreement or incongruity. Using the word “dissonance” within the music context means an inharmonious or harsh sound–discord.
All of us have multiple cognitions (pieces of knowledge) and a lot of them “agree” with one another. For example: People that believe in the Bible should have no problems in believing everything that the Word of God says. If they don’t have contrary beliefs then their thinking is in harmony with God’s Word and there resides a peaceful spirit within. But, if they have reservations (to put it politely)–because of “social proof”, for example–about certain identified sins found in the Bible then there is cognitive discord within the mind or, “cognitive dissonance”; more so if their “reservations” lead to actual sin.
Opinions and beliefs have been changing more frequently in the last several decades than before. This “changing” has created cognitive dissonance within a lot of people; it’s because of the changing in thinking that they have had to do in order to continue to be accepted by society–peer pressure has a way of getting to most of us. Cognitive dissonance causes unrestful minds and spirits which leads to stress and depression. (A stressed and depressed people are much easier to control… because of the medication they then accept… physically and… spiritually.)
The failure to maintain the moral standards we once had as a nation is the result of the deceptive plans of the devil (satan) coming to fruition. While dominating deception continues among us, God’s people need to stand firmly upon His Word and draw nearer to Him, being a light to those that are in the world that has no hope to offer.
The Bible says to choose this day whom you will serve (Joshua 24:15). Choosing righteousness will bring cognitive harmony within your mind and your spirit. There is hope.
Continue to pray for us,my wife and I, at Paradigm Control as we continue in efforts to show what, how and why changes in the thinking of societies happen; thus, bringing to attention to those who have ears to hear and eyes to see that we all have a way (the Way) to have peace with God, with ourselves and with our fellow man.
